Our Story
The Hicks Livery Stable, located at the corner of 10th Street and East Adams Street in Brownsville, Texas, was constructed in 1909. This historic building originally functioned as a livery stable, providing essential services such as horse boarding and carriage rentals during the early 20th century.
The stable was owned by Edgar and Goldye Hicks, prominent local entrepreneurs. In addition to their livery business on East Adams Street, the Hicks family owned a country home in West Brownsville, which included a servant's house and a large stable. The livery stable played a significant role in the community, serving as a hub for transportation needs during an era when horse-drawn carriages were the primary mode of conveyance.
Over the years, as transportation evolved and the demand for livery services declined, the Hicks Livery Stable underwent various transformations. The building remained vacant for many years, reflecting the broader shifts in transportation and urban development.
In January 2025, the historic structure was revitalized and reopened as The Livery Venue, a modern event center designed to host weddings, celebrations, and other special occasions. This transformation preserved the building's historical significance while adapting it for contemporary use, contributing to the cultural and economic revitalization of downtown Brownsville.
The adaptive reuse of the Hicks Livery Stable into The Livery Venue exemplifies the community's dedication to honoring its architectural heritage while meeting current needs, ensuring that this historic landmark continues to be a vibrant part of Brownsville's urban landscape.
